Do you know what today is? Yes, it is September 8, 2011. Obama gave a speech today about jobs for the nation. I have been looking forward to this speech since I learned about it a couple of weeks ago. It was supposed to occur a couple days ago, but the Republican debate was held that day so Obama chose another day for his speech. This morning I was even excited to see this speech, just because of all the hype about it.
This evening I received a phone call from a person who calls me when she has extra perennials that she does not want, so I go get them and throw them in my yard to get rid of the bare all over. She called this evening and I dropped everything and ran over there, and got 3 large bags full of plants, how exciting, right? I got home, took care of a couple things, and, guess what? Speech was over. I did not think to record it before I left.
But never fear, we live in a very media rich world!! So, guess what I found! President Obama's Speech! I love YouTube!!
President Obama talked about stopping the political circus and help the economy. He acknowledged the uncertainty in long term service to a company that congress has not always held in their best interests. He introduced a new bill, with the purpose of more people going back to work, and those working to make more money. Payroll taxes will be cut in half, and he wants this plan to be passed right away. I was a little surprised that he did not outline more specific details of what is in the bill. He did talk about different tax cuts for businesses for hiring veterans, or giving raises to staff, or increasing how many jobs they are providing.

I am not positive at this point if this is the level of detail that is typical of a president to do, or if the public is normally informed by our President about more specific details in a bill when s/he introduces it. I realize that this is the way Obama has been since he was campaigning, in fact, the way he answered questions is what intrigued me to start listening to more politics. Only listening to future Presidents will give me my answer.
Back to the beauty of our media; there is already a response to Obama’s speech! Yes, ladies and gents, this is the beauty of politics and new, new media. Check it out here.
Bernadette,
ReplyDeleteThe capabilities of our social media world are phenomenal. There is no excuse now for not being "in touch" with the world when all you have to do is get online and get the information you need. Obviously the political leaders are very aware of social media as they use as many of these devices to reach all venues. Just as you mentioned, you forgot to record the speech. However, you were still able to access it on YouTube. What an amazing world we live in. Before all of the social media technology, our time was limited by when broadcasts would be fed. Now our time is our own and we can obtain the information at our leisure. Keep following the political world!

I feel like I am not up on all the latest politics (or news in general), but whenever I need to find something, I can trust the Internet. Social media has created a world where, at the touch of a button, one can search for and find anything. If I wanted Obama's inaugural address (for like a compare/contrast discussion), I could easily find it. Social media will continue to change the way we interact with one another as it matures and provides us more services. It's scary, but like you said, we live in a very media rich world -- one that will only grow in wealth.
ReplyDeleteNice work.
The fact that social media is so present in todays world, will keep politician's on their tows. Someone is always waiting for them to do something stupid, so they can break the news on their websites, YouTube, Twitter, etc.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that we can watch whatever we want on YouTube and this is a perfect example of this.
It's rather nice to hear about Obama and have it not be trashing him. I don't know a ton about politics but everytime I bring it up most people bash him. From thing's I've heard it seems like he's not doing too bad of a job. From reading your blog it seems like he's trying a few things to help our economy. It looks like he's trying to get more people to work, and those who are working to get paid more. It's pretty cool that you can use a new media like youtube to find the presidents speech right away like that
ReplyDeletePolitics are definitely not my bag. I do not get involved in them even though sometimes I feel like I should care more. However, it is nice to see how useful technology is. Even with the use of blogs I was able to learn some about politics by reading your post. Would I have ever looked that up myself? No, but with your post I am able to connect politically. The beauty of blogging gives me the basic information and nothing more or less. Great job and thanks for giving me the facts!
ReplyDeleteI had a similar time where media was so important and up to date it was scary. So on my face book i noticed several posts relating to the same person who i do not remember but for now i will call this person X. So at first i read something like DAMN that must have hurt. or another post saying OUCH X that must have hurt. So naturally i got extremely curious and Googled there name . Not only did i get several posts of sports web sites that had play by plays of the game but videos of the indecent and a LIVE twitter feed of other average people reactions and prediction of his collision. and it all happened 5-7 min ago . Now that is FAST.
